WORKSHOPS 2008-2009
Welcome to my world of painting landscapes on location! I paint in all mediums but currently I am excited about combining my many years of watercolor experience on paper with acrylics on the new watercolor canvas. I am finding that I can achieve the feeling of light and transparency found in watercolor with the intensity and opaque options available in acrylic. This works beautifully for any subject including portrait and figure.
My workshop procedures vary from location to location and with different levels of students or cruises locations versus land locations. I begin each day with a complete demonstration in what ever medium the workshop is stressing. I explain how to plan a painting stressing composition and values first. I set up the painting with emphasis on these fundamentals but once I am into the painting process I stress how important it is to see the beautiful colors in nature that exist before our eyes. Beautiful paintings come from beautiful seeing. Most of my students many of whom are professional painters in their own right tell me that I teach them to see colors in nature that they never saw before and they needed someone to point them out. My demonstrations are not quick starts but normally involve a lot of teaching and explanations emphasizing the creative options available to us as artists. Students then have the rest of the day to paint under my guidance and advice for corrections . We have several group critiques during the workshop along with daily individual critiques and normally a thorough value and color lesson separate from the actual demonstration lessons.

Peter Spataro has been here several times and always gets rave reviews. He is a wonderful artist with a
loose and fresh representational style, as well as a warm and giving teacher with a great sense of humor.
Peter has three academic college degrees and has studied with many famous painters. He considers the
single most influential factor in becoming a serious artist to be the five years he studied with Edgar Whitney.
An award-winning artist, Peter conducts workshops all over the US and has been teaching for over 30 years. He
is a member of the New England Watercolor Society, the Hudson Valley Art Association, The Miami and
Florida Watercolor Societies, the Academic Artists Association, the Salmagundi Club, the North Shore Art
Association, among others. His work has been highlighted in American Artist Magazine, The Artist Magazine,
The Best of Watercolor as well as Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Although he paints a wide variety of
subject matter in all media, Peter’s major focus is to capture the ever-changing moods and light of landscapes in
watercolor. Check out his work at peterspataroart.googlepages.com.
